just a few words before I go

Last night the Boise State Broncos defeated the Oklahoma Sooners in a 43-42 victory and a bowl game that will probably go down as the best of 2007 and possibly one of the best bowl games ever. Boise State went into the game as serious underdogs, despite the fact that they had an unblemished record. But you know what? The greatest part of this whole dream sequence wasn’t even the game itself. It is what happened after the game.

During the post-game interviews, FOX broadcaster Chris Myers allowed running back Ian Johnson to propose to his cheerleader girlfriend. And of course she gushed an enthusiastic yes. Can you think of a better story? Not only did David topple Goliath and stun the world, but the handsome, bright eyed star running back, decked out in his pads drops to one knee and takes his girlfriend’s hand and with an anxious smile proposed marriage. And she, young, beautiful, pom-poms and ponytail jumped and cried and bellowed yes. How many men dreamed of living such a moment? I know I did. Of course, I was too small to play football and no cheerleader would look my way, plus I had the whole fear of commitment thing going for me, so that dream was pretty much unreachable for me. But it was nice to see it played out in real life.

Criticism for Myers, though. Instead of saying to Johnson, “I know you wanted to say something to your girlfriend”, he said, “I know you want to propose to your girlfriend.” Chris! Dude! Don’t spoil the surprise like that. Fortunately, it didn’t kill the ebullience of the moment for either Johnson or his fiancee.

For the next two months you can find me here:

Now, I’m not sure if I would be considered a cinephile, but I did purchase the full pass, which means that for the next two months I will be living at the Belcourt theater here in Nashville. A full pass was $112, which may seem like a lot to some, but how many other times in my life will I have a chance to see 30 classic, historical films on the big screen? I mean, I could either get off work and head home and plop on the couch with a beer or I could get lost for two hours. I choose the latter. Perhaps this sounds geeky, but I am quite excited! Fellini, Hitchcock, Truffaut, Bergman. “The climate is advantageous”.

So, if you need me, you’ll know where I’ll be. Maybe I can drag a friend along every now and then so we can discuss the films over a pint or two afterwards.

Simple pleasures.
