just a few words before I go

I am posting this video in hopes of exorcising this song from my brain. I kept singing it over and over this weekend until my girlfriend gave me a dirty look and asked me to stop. But I can’t…because “he’s an angel with no halo….and one wing in the fiiiirrrrreeeee!” I can’t stop!

Sunday is the worst day of the week to realize that you are coming down with a cold. Any other day of the week, especially Wednesday through Friday, you know that the weekend is approaching and you will have a little reprieve. But Sunday? And if you are like me, you hate to miss work. So… I am staying away from my coworkers as much as possible and closing the door to my office so I don’t start an epidemic. I would have much rather stayed in bed. But I guess I get it from my parents. I can’t remember one day during my whole life when my mother or father called in sick to work. I’m sure they did. I just don’t remember it. I mean, hell, my grandmother died on her way to work, so you know she couldn’t have been feeling too great that day. Still, she went. I pretty much have to be hospitalized to miss work. I remember a day when I chipped my tooth and had a blood clot in my arm and still finished out the day before going to the doctor and dentist. Not a great day, but at least I got my eight hours in. Anyway, I don’t get colds that often, but when I do, they tend to linger for about four or five days. So, I am hoping this one has nearly run its course.

I read yesterday about a zoo in Belgium that asks visitors not to stare at the chimps. Apparently, one of the chimps was raised by humans and they want him to develop a relationship with the other chimps. So you pay to get into the zoo and you can look at the chimp, but when he looks at you, you have to look away real quick. I’m sure that will do a lot for his self-esteem. That’s like buying a movie ticket and the theater asking you not to stare at the screen.

Since when did a rambling, psychotic rant become a manifesto? I know Marx, I’ve read Marx. And you, Cho, are no Marx (or even a Kaczynski). I think the media are a bunch of vultures. They thrive on tragedy. There’s a difference between reporting the news and glorifying it. I bet they were chomping at the bit to get that video out. What amazes me more are the people who are able to do interviews nearly hours after a tragedy has occurred. I remember watching the Today show once where this couple’s home had just burned down. They were sitting on the front steps with nothing but burning embers behind them and they were answering questions from Matt Lauer. That is unfathomable to me. But maybe that is because I agree with the line in Woody Allen’s film “Deconstructing Harry”. As Billy Crystal rides the elevator to hell, you hear, “Floor 7: The Media. Sorry, that floor is all filled up.”

Finally, I read that Don Cheadle may be playing Miles Davis in a film. Years ago, Wesley Snipes’ name came up for that role, which would have been perfect, I thought. But I have a great amount of admiration for Don Cheadle and his skills as an actor. That would be a HUGE role. But it is also a great story.

Do I think the statements made by Don Imus regarding the Rutgers women’s basketball team were grossly inappropriate? Yep. Do I think Don Imus should be fired for those statements? Nope. Why? Because it’s not going to change anything. Same goes for Billy Packer. This has been going on for years and will continue to go on. Demanding respect will never get you anywhere. You want respect? Command it. There’s a line in “The Departed” in which Jack Nicholson as the character Frank Costello states, “If I got one thing against the black chappies, it’s this - no one gives it to you. You have to take it.” The Costello character is an unsavory hood and a bigot, but he’s not dumb. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton can pound the pulpit and scream about firings and boycotts, but it ain’t gonna change anything. The power is in your hands. You get respect by working from the inside out, not vice-versa. As long as you yell at other people to respect you, you will never get it. But when you display self-respect and humanity, then any signs of disrespect from others reflect negatively on them, not you.

Imus and Packer are lost causes. There are plenty of kids out there who are not. You fire Imus and most likely another person who slips and makes a moronic statement will fill his place. I’m not sticking up for Imus, but he made a mistake. It’s ignorance (and prejudice) that caused him to do it. Imus, Packer, Tim Hardaway, Isaiah Washington, Mel Gibson. Everyone is guilty of it. If we fired every person who illuminated to the world their true feelings, no one would have a job. I just think that if you want to have acceptable human beings, raise acceptable children. You don’t have to acquiesce to everything you deem wrong, but you don’t have to spew hatred either.

Where is this coming from? Watch the videos below:

Because my bet is that Senator Fred will get the nomination as the GOP candidate, I am adding this little ad from Slate.com. It gave me a little chuckle.
