I just can’t think of one right now.
Some would say that the guilty verdict against O.J. Simpson on the 13th anniversary of his acquittal is both ironic and fitting. Who knows what happened back in June of 1994 when Simpson’s ex-wife Nicole Brown and a friend were found dead outside of her home? A lot of people are absolutely convinced that O.J. Simpson was guilty of the crime and got away with murder. So, for many, today must be a glorious day. And if Simpson did in fact commit those murders 14 years ago, then tonight’s verdict only rights a heinous wrong. Only God knows for sure.
But I will say this: when a man breaks into a hotel room to get back things that were stolen from him, and almost all of the other people involved turn on him and he is suddenly faced with spending the rest of his life in prison, even Stevie Wonder can see how shitty that deal is.
This verdict was one of revenge, nothing more. Does Simpson deserve to be in jail for the rest of his life? If he did in fact commit the murders that had this whole country transfixed for one hot summer back in the 1990’s, then yes, and this should be considered one swift kick in the balls by karma. Does he deserve to be put in jail for life for essentially holding people who have stolen from him against their will in some cushy Nevada hotel room? Not hardly. I have to call bullshit on that one.
In this country, if they want you bad enough, they’ll get you. The cross hairs have been on Simpson’s back ever since he strolled out of that courtroom a free man back in ‘95. And tonight, they pulled the trigger.
About a month or so ago, I accepted a ticket to a hockey game that takes place tomorrow night from some dear friends. Being that they are dear friends, I could not and would not cancel on them, DESPITE the fact that the most interesting vice-presidential debate in years and years and years will be taking place tomorrow night. However, I can’t imagine how much enjoyment I will be feeling at the game knowing that the fate of the presidential race could be decided by this debate.
I’m scared, you know. Everyone is underestimating the intelligence of Governor Palin, and I am sincerely concerned that she is about to pull off the greatest rope-a-dope in political history. If she does come off tomorrow as intelligent and pithy, the lead the democrats currently hold could dwindle down, once again, to nonexistence. I’d like to believe that the McCain campaign IS as incompetent as it has appeared these last few months. But this could be their last chance to land a blow that will keep them in the fight. What are the chances Governor Palin is actually the Ace up their sleeves? Time (and TIVO) will tell.
